There have always been those who say that SEO is a one time only deal and is not needed consistently to maintain rankings or even prospective clients who ask “Why do I need to pay a monthly SEO fee?”. Of course those who actually provide SEO understand that consistent search engine optimization is needed in order to improve or maintain rankings, especially when there are many websites competing for the same search terms. The main reason that constant SEO is needed is because of the number of times Google is updating their algorithms, which in turn changes the search results and order of rankings that web users see when conducting a search query. According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, in 2010 that number was over 500 times. That’s a lot of algo updates so naturally Google search users will see ranking go up and down pretty regularly. Especially if you mix in personalized search results.

Schmidt will be answering claims that Google’s business practices are anti-competitive today at a Senate subcommittee hearing in Washington, DC. Just as all witnesses are required to do, he has something written that was submitted to the subcommittee prior to his appearance today. The subcommittee has released that PDF document , which contains interesting details about how Google tests those algorithm changes.

As quoted from Schmidt’s document:

“To give you a sense of the scale of the changes that Google considers, in 2010 we conducted 13,311 precision evaluations to see whether proposed algorithm changes improved the quality of its search results, 8,157 side-by-side experiments where it presented two sets of search results to a panel of human testers and had the evaluators rank which set of results was better, and 2,800 click evaluations to see how a small sample of real-life Google users responded to the change. Ultimately, the process resulted in 516 changes that were determined to be useful to users based on the data and, therefore, were made to Google’s algorithm. Most of these changes are imperceptible to users and affect a very small percentage of websites, but each one of them is implemented only if we believe the change will benefit our users.”

This kind of testing is a part of the reason that Google’s quality of search results are so much better than the other engines out there. It’s also why we can continue to expect more and more algorithm updates from Google going forward.

It shows up on the bottom of your screen. Looking at this law firm out of Mesa, AZ the toolbar popped up and showed other local law firm Google maps listings, related videos and additional web pages. I noticed reviews and other local restaurants when I searched for a local restaurant.

The Related bar will stay minimized unless you hover over. You do have the option to disable it if you don’t want it popping up. The option to disable Related or hide the tool for specific Web sites is available in the options menu.

Data collected via Related is similar to how Google collects search information. According to Google, the Related extension operates by sending Google certain information about your machine and web sites at the time you visit them, including the URL of the web site, your machine’s IP address, and one or more Google cookies. This data is retained in Google’s server logs and maintained according to our general Privacy Policy.

Click on the image to view a larger screenshot and you can get a better idea. This brings more importance to having a website optimized for organic search results, video, images and Google locals as those are the links that show up in the Google Related toolbar.

High Rank Websites is a web site design and search engine optimization company in San Diego. We specialize in creating websites geared to come up high in the search engines through proven search engine optimization methods. We also provide Internet marketing consulting services to help companies looking to grow their business through the Internet. While some companies specialize in SEO, and others specialize in web design, High Rank Websites specializes in both. How your website looks, how it is laid out, and the message it relays to your site visitors will directly affect it’s success. Having a high ranking is often times not enough. While high visibility is crucial to the success of your business, that alone will not guarantee success. Our goal is not simply to design and optimize our clients sites, but to do everything we can to help ensure that your online marketing campaign is a success.

High Rank Websites, Inc. works primarily with small to medium sized businesses who are looking to dominate their market on the search engines. We utilize “white hat” search engine optimization methods to ensure that our clients aren’t at of risk being penalized or banned by the search engines. Plenty of SEO companies use overly agressive techniques that put their cleints at risk. Some of these companies are great at what they do, but anything that is done to deceive a search engine could end up costing your company in the long run. Our search engine optimizers are the very best and do not need to use these techniques to get your website to the 1st page of Google, Yahoo! and MSN.

Ask to see our results. You will be impressed.

Our goal is to work with our clients for life. The only way we can accomplish that is to do everything we can to make sure your online marketing campaign is successful.
